Section CO2 was the second phase of the Northern Lewistown Bypass project. It is a one-mile portion of four-lane, divided, limited-access highway beginning at Country Lane, near the Granville and Derry townships border, and connecting with a new Electric Avenue Interchange for Route 22/522 with Route 322. It also included reconstruction of three miles of Route 322 in the interchange area, more than four miles of new interchange ramps, six new bridges and more than 4,200 feet of retaining wall. Some clearing of trees on the ridge north of Route 22/522 in section AO2, the center construction section, was done under this contract to avoid interfering with potential Indiana Bat habitat. The new interchange between Lewistown and Burnham is expected to divert about 60 percent of the through-traffic that had used West Fourth Street (old Route 22/522 through Lewistown) to the new highway. The CO2 construction section was awarded to HRI, Inc. of State College at a cost of $50.6 million. Work got underway in January 2001 and was completed in 2003.
