Construction Update: SEC. A02

The new Route 22/522 Bypass near the Industrial Drive Interchange.

Section AO2 of the Route 22/522 project involved 4.5 miles of new four-lane, divided, limited-access highway from Airport Hill Road to just west of Country Lane in Derry Township, along with about three miles of new interchange ramps.

This new highway lies northwest of the old Route 22/522 through Granville and Derry townships. As it diverges to the north of the existing road, the new Route 22/522 was built along Big Ridge and across Big Ridge Road.

A new, full interchange with Industrial Park Road, the access to the Mifflin County Industrial Park, is part of the section and was designed to divert commercial, through-traffic from the local roadways, such as old Route 22/522.

Mashuda Corporation of Cranberry, Pa., was the successful bidder for the $64 million Section AO2, which connects the eastern and western sections of the bypass project.

Construction on AO2 began in January 2002.  The mainline was opened in late 2005 and the interchange was complete in October 2006.

There was sampling of well and spring water supplies prior to construction by PennDOT to establish baselines for these systems, to help in determining if highway construction had any future impact. Pre-construction surveys included water conditions, water levels and depth of wells.
