Welcome to your source of information on the Route 22/522 Northern Lewistown Bypass project.

Crews install guide rail along only Route 22/522 as part of the final project activity

The Bypass project is the improvement and construction of nearly 12 miles of highway and ramps in Mifflin County, including the new Electric Avenue interchange for Routes 22/522 and 322.  Construction began on the more than $135 million project in 2000, with the first of three construction sections.  Most of the highway was opened to traffic November 21, 2005, and the entire Bypass was opened in the fall of 2006, when the full Industrial Park Road Interchange was completed.

The three construction sections, each done under separate contracts, are shown on the map below.

The first or western-most section (CO4) got underway in April 2000 and included improvements to the existing Route 22/522, which is now Business 22. Construction of the eastern-most section (CO2), new highway and a new interchange at Electric Avenue, began in January 2001. The third and central construction phase (AO2) got underway in 2002. It involved a new four-lane, limited-access highway along with the new interchange at Industrial Park Road.

The project was essentially completed in 2006 with final, off-road activities slated for Spring 2007.
