Route 22/Northern Lewistown Bypass Project
Menu Project Background

New ramps linking Routes 322 and 22.

The $135 million improvement of Route 22/522 in Mifflin County serves both regional and local traffic. Increased mobility, new suburban development and additional economic activity all created higher demands on the local highway network.

The construction project addressed traffic congestion, safety and other transportation issues. It involved nearly 12 miles of new or improved highway from Wakefield Road in Oliver Township, west of Lewistown, through a new Electric Avenue Interchange for Routes 22/522 and 322 north of Lewistown. Extensive environmental and engineering studies determined this to be the preferred alternative to meet goals such as minimizing impacts on farmland and diverting through-traffic that was routed through Lewistown.

A ground-breaking ceremony in March 2000 launched the project and it was complete in late 2006.

The improvement included three sections, each constructed under separate contracts:

  • CO4 - the widening and repaving of four miles of Route 22/522 from Wakefield Road in Oliver Township to Airport Hill Road in Granville Township. Highway work began in April 2000 and was completed in 2003 .
  • CO2 - a one-mile portion of four-lane, divided, limited-access highway, beginning at Country Lane in Derry Township and connecting with a new Electric Avenue Interchange with Route 322, along with three miles of improvements to Route 322 in the interchange area, more than four miles of new interchange ramps, six new bridges and more than 4,200 feet of retaining wall. The highway project got underway in January 2001 and was completed in 2005.
  • AO2 - 4.5 miles of new four-lane, divided, limited-access highway from Airport Hill Road to the area of Country Lane. This new highway lies northwest of the former Route 22/522 through Granville and Derry townships. A new interchange with Industrial Park Road includes nearly three miles of ramps.  Highway construction began in January 2002 and was completed in 2006.

The entire project:

  • Relieves congestion on the former Route 22/522, what is now Business 22, by diverting through-traffic to the new highway,

  • Reduces congestion-related accidents,

  • Improves access to the Mifflin County Industrial Park, and

  • Provides a modern, high-speed interchange with Route 322 for the Route 22/522 Northern Lewistown Bypass.

Maguire Group provided construction management for all three project sections.
